Turkeys Tackling Hunger is an annual fundraiser put on by the Hays County Food Bank to bring holiday meals to families in need.
The fundraiser campaign starts in October and runs through December 31st. Each November the food bank distributes “Turkey Boxes” complete with 1 frozen turkey, 1 large can of corn, 1 large can of green beans, 1 can of cranberry sauce, 1 large can of yams, 1 box of stuffing mix, 1 box of instant mashed potatoes, and 1 can of pumpkin. The turkey and all of the Thanksgiving trimmings are purchased and packaged through H-E-B for $20 a box.
Hays County Food Bank Marketing Intern Katie Byland says that while all types of donations are appreciated and accepted, monetary donations are primarily needed to pay for the “Turkey Boxes” as well as ongoing expenses of the food bank. Byland said that this year the Food Bank has several great sponsors such as Night Hawk Frozen Foods, The Root Cellar Café, Grande Communications, and many more helping the cause.
Nearly 3,400 families have signed up to receive holiday turkey boxes this year. Anyone in need who lives in Hays County or within the boundaries of the San Marcos or Hays Consolidated Independent School Districts is eligible to reserve and receive a “Turkey Box.”
