Holly Wise – Founder and CEO

After completing her Master of Science degree in Mass Communications from Murray State University in 2008, Holly was hired as a general assignment reporter at a daily newspaper.

Within a year, she was promoted to Bureau Chief where she managed the newsroom’s operation and production as well as covered several news beats. Eventually, she became the Editor of a weekly newspaper in Texas and was promoted quickly to City Editor for the company’s main daily newspaper. As the City Editor, Holly managed the newsroom’s daily coverage for its print and online editions. She served as the lead editor on breaking news stories, special projects and long term centerpieces, and acted as the social media editor, with the principal responsibility of cultivating community engagement and enhancing digital growth.

She worked on the web desk at the Austin American-Statesman just in time to help launch their new digital product.

She founded VoiceBox Media in November 2012 and currently teaches journalism at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. She is the faculty advisor of Women Communicators of Austin at Texas State and was recently nominated an Alpha Chi Honor Society Favorite Professor of 2015.

She is an alumna of the World Journalism Institute and is a frequent guest speaker at her alma mater.

What excites you about the world? I love how our world has become so much more accessible through social media and the web. As far away as people may physically be, it is still easy to keep in close contact with them.

What are your favorite hobbies? I love doing anything that requires being active outside. My top choice, as of lately, has been rollerblading. I enjoy watching just about any sports game that comes through on my television, too.

What are you most looking forward to during your time at VoiceBox Media?  I am most excited about the potential impact our team has to help the community of people living around us.

What excites you about the world? The creativity and drive that humanity has to improve itself. We have so many challenges to face, but we’ve made a great deal of progress. Most of that progress comes from people becoming more educated about the issues impacting us all. The information age is pushing the envelope on that. It shows us how much we have learned as well as how far we have to go.

What are your favorite hobbies? I’m a huge nerd and I love all things related to science fiction, fantasy and games of all sorts. A typical weekend for me usually involves homework, rolling dice of one sort or another and spending time with my son and fiancé.

What are you most looking forward to during your time at VoiceBox Media? This is an exciting opportunity to put the skills I’ve been developing in school to good use. I’m especially looking forward to taking the myth out of the issues we cover and providing people facts to make informed decisions about issues we cover.

What excites you about the world? I love how different every part of the world is, and how cultures vary. Throughout my life, I hope I get to experience as much culture as I can because this world has a lot of it to offer.

What are your favorite hobbies? Lately, I have been really into crafting, specifically crafts I find on the internet that I am pretty incapable of doing well.

What are you most looking forward to during your time at VoiceBox Media?  I am really excited about getting other people excited about the important topics that we are discussing.

What excites you about the world? That every day is different. It amazes me that no two places in the world will ever be the same. It’s very humbling to take a step back and see where we actually live and the things going on around us.

What are your favorite hobbies? My favorite hobbies include working out (on occasion), being a crazy cat mom to my fur baby Phoebe and baking.

What are you most looking forward to during your time at VoiceBox Media? Finding a voice for those that are unable to tell their stories while working to better my journalism skills itself.

What excites you about the world? How much it has to offer! We’re only on this Earth for a temporary amount of time and I think making the most of each day is extremely important.

What are your favorite hobbies? My favorite hobbies are practicing yoga, biking, and going hiking with my dog, Kendrick Lamar, at the greenbelt.

What are you most looking forward to during your time at VoiceBox Media? Being able to not only develop my own voice and writing skills, but to also broaden and expand my knowledge and cultural capita.
